Holistic Approaches to Managing Ulcers
Introduction:
As a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Health Coach specializing in Gut Health and Digestive Repair, I've delved deep into the intricacies of many digestive issues, including painful ulcers, which can complicate digestive health in many ways. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore holistic approaches to managing ulcers, drawing insights from both scientific research and traditional wisdom.
Understanding Ulcers:
Ulcers, particularly gastric ulcers, manifest as open sores in the stomach lining and can cause significant discomfort and pain. Symptoms can range from burning in the stomach to severe nausea and vomiting to black and tarry stools. The main cause of an ulcer is a bacterial infection called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Another factor; prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can exacerbate ulcer development. Conventional treatments often involve antibiotics and acid-reducing medications. However, integrating holistic approaches alongside medical interventions can enhance healing and promote long-term gut health.
In my practice I use a 4 pronged approach to treating ulcers:
Dietary Strategies:
In order to heal an ulcer the diet must be addressed. Processed foods, sugar, alcohol and fatty fried foods will all exacerbate an ulcer. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has gastroprotective properties aiding in ulcer healing and combating H. pylori infection. Some specific foods I recommend are:
- Flavonoid-rich foods such as berries, kale, onions, and decaffeinated green tea. Flavonoid compounds found in fruits, vegetables and teas, including quercetin, catechins, and anthocyanins, exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
- Cabbage juice is very soothing and healing to the gut mucosa. If you have a juicer, this is a wonderful addition to the diet.
- Aloe Juice is another very soothing compound that can help to reduce the burning that accompanies an ulcer. I recommend ¼ cup before a meal.
- Marshmallow or slippery elm tea. Sipping on these throughout the day is an excellent way to coat the gastric mucosa.
- Avoid overly spicy foods, citrus juices, and caffeine which can irritate an ulcer.
Nutritional Supports for healing an ulcer
In order for your ulcer to be repaired, it will need a lot of love. I use a number of supplements to help the tissue heal and become less inflamed.
Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL): Derived from licorice root, DGL offers a promising adjunct therapy for ulcers. By inhibiting H. pylori growth and promoting mucosal repair, DGL supplements can help to alleviate symptoms and support ulcer healing. Moreover, DGL exhibits demulcent properties, forming a protective layer over the stomach lining and reducing gastric acid secretion.
Vitamin U (from cabbage juice)- normalizes gastric and intestinal function
Chlorophyll- supports the mucosal layer and modulates the immune system
Serum Derived Immunoglobulins: Helps to decrease discomfort, bloating and gas
ZInc Carnosine- To protect the mucosa and has anti-ulcerative properties
Eradicating H. Pylori
In order to heal an ulcer and prevent its recurrence, it’s vital to eradicate the reason it's there; H. Pylori. This can be done a number of ways. In western medicine, antibiotic therapy is used alongside an acid blocker. This is sometimes necessary in stubborn cases of H. Pylori. In my practice, I typically try to reduce or eradicate H. Pylori with a more natural approach before referring my client to a medical doctor for antibiotics.
This treatment can include the following:
-A probiotic that binds specifically to H.Pylori (L. Reuteri)- studies have show this to be an effective treatment without the side effects of traditional H.Pylori eradication protocols.
- A biofilm disruptor ( H Pylori likes to hide underneath a protective layer)
-Other H Pylori eradicating supplements like Mastic Gum, Zinc Carnosine, and Berberine
Lifestyle Modifications:
Beyond dietary interventions, certain lifestyle changes play a crucial role in ulcer management and overall well-being:
Quit smoking: Smoking can exacerbate ulcer symptoms and impede healing. Quitting smoking can significantly improve ulcer outcomes and promote overall health.
Limit alcohol consumption: Alcohol consumption can irritate the stomach lining and worsen ulcer symptoms. Moderating or eliminating alcohol intake can support ulcer healing.
Manage stress: Chronic stress can exacerbate ulcer symptoms and disrupt gut health. Incorporating stress-reducing practices such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can promote relaxation and support ulcer healing.
You may need prescription acid blocking medications, depending on the severity of your ulcer
